painting my van for the first time

i want to paint my van but have never sprayed anything before and havnt got the cash to pay for a professional paint job.I only want to paint the bottom half so i dont have as much prep work.. I really just want to know how hard it is to get a reasonable finish? and of course how easy could it be for me to "feck" it right up and make a big mess of things?? any help or pics would b much appreciated! thanks
