gas hob like a jet engine!

My gas hob - well the left one - is like a jet engine. By this I mean it's really noisy when on it's highest setting. It whistles like a muthahubbard and the blue flame goes patchy. There is also an accompanying smell of gas. I'm guessing that air is gettin in somewhere but I've checked the connections - nothing there - so will it be at the dial itself?

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

Have you check the hole in the cooker panel is clear?

Has it been taken apart and cleaned recently? May not be 'seated' correctly??

That's all I can think of if the other one work's ok.....

Sounds like the burner cap (the black/brown metal disc) is not positioned correctly on top of the burner skirt (the silver piece with the slots to let the gas out)
