gearbox help needed..please help

Post by sivdubgti »

ive got a 1983 t3 1.9d,had a 1600 d box in it but the box sounded knackered, and leeked oil,so got a new one (well second hand of here)fitted the box got a new slector arm bracket of just kampers but problem i have now is that the box ias in first gear the van drives sounds all good but gear stick will not move, well should i say the box will not change by hand either?any clues as at end of my tether..the sector rod moves sound when not on box,and the box doent seam to want to change by hand tryed to move it goes in and out but not side ways.

ok so with the ball and socket disconnected can you move the ball in and out of the box and backwards and forwards
on a 5 speed you have to pull it out of the box to get 4th5th plane, push into box to stop that's 2nd3rd plane and push fully into box against spring that's 1st and reverse
if they all select at the box then you need to reallign the centre joint on the linkage
if they don't select at the box then the box has a fault, but that would have been apparant when you tried it on the floor before changing the oil and installing so it's probably a linkage set up issue

hi thanks myn a 4 speed box 1600d my van is a 1983 1600d but has had a 1.9d engine fitted, the box was just fitted not tryed as didnt have thew new slector rod in time, the oil not changed yet,was going to do that once fitted, this is the first box ive ever worked on a t25,can push the shaft in but seams jamed, the gearbox rod moves freely when not on the box,the van drives in the first gear perfect no noises etc,the old box worked but made some bad noises, and all the oil had leeked out,got in one day to move it drove good up till put in 3rd,an dit seamed to stick there?couldnt get it out so droped box,and got another second hand out of a breaker on brickworks, but ive now taken of the end cap of the old box and it looks like the shaft linkages have poped of?

ok on a four speed the default position is 3rd/4th, against the spring pressure in 7mm is 1st and 2nd and in another 7mm against the spring and backwards is reverse, you've probably messed up the linkage, did you split the linkage at the sliding joint at all ?

do you mean the part that bolts to the box with a 19mm nut and then slides into the rod?as i took that of,didnt touch any other part of the rod?
on my van the new part i bought of just kampers is the slector bracket it looks like a l shape melal part with 2 white balls on it,the spline part of this mates to the shaft on the box in 1 way ,then the rod has 2 sqaure box type parts and the 2 balls slot in ?

Do you know the gearbox code for the new box you've fitted? That would help. I'm assuming that you bought the new selector from JK because it was different to the one on your old box?

IF it's a DK box then as Aiden said it's originally from an Aircooled van, to be able to use this gearbox you need the linkage from an Aircooled bus and you also need to extend the rear section by 54mm if I remember correctly. Don't take that measurement as gospel, do a search for fitting a DK box on here and you'll find all the info you need.

I only know a little about this as I have a DK box and the Aircooled linkage waiting to go into my diesel bus and have done a little research. :ok
