New to VDub diesels! It appears to be the route to better performance to upgrade to a AAZ for a pretty much standard camper.
Is the JX a later derivative? Is it head design? Valve sizes? Swept bore volume (extra 75cc/pot)? Manifolds? I see the JX turbo is used with AAZ.

What makes the AAZ torquey over the JX

Re: What makes the AAZ torquey over the JX
Yeah I think it's basically more capacity
JX is 1.6L
AAZ is 1.9L
They're pretty much the same block, more fuel = more power
AAZ does have 'D' shaped air inlet ports whereas the jx is more rounded (possibly slightly smaller?)
Some people swap all the JX stuff over to the AAZ lump, including injectors, air inlet needs grinding out a bit so the holes line up a bit more, there is a guide in the wiki or on brickyard about it, just do a search there is plenty of info there.
I personally stuck with mostly AAZ stuff and re-index'd the turbo, it's not too much work. Only just got mine MOT'd so not got many miles on it yet but it's quite pokey so far. I used to have a 1.6D (CS engine code - normally aspirated) and it was like driving a big slug.
Something to note when buying an AAZ engine is that there are 4 variations of fuel pump, depending on year with varying degrees of electrickery - i'm not saying they're fly-by-wire or anything but do have some electrics. Early ones are the best but then the engines do have a few miles on them by now. I got a later one and ignored all the wiring bar the shut-off solenoid following some good advice on these forums and it's running fine (but about 85% of what it's capable of apparently, but then again i'm not too foot happy yet, pootling along is fine)
I'd get cracking with the search engine, there's loads of info on here
good luck,
Brent
