Idle Stabilizer Wiring
The wiring into the 2 plugs that connect to the idle stablizing unit on my 2ltr Aircooled was a bit dodgy - if you moved it the van cut out. I sent it to a guy over here to have a look at a few little things including the dodgy wires. He couldn't get another wiring loom piece so he cut the plugs off and connected the wires, however I think he connected them wrong according to the Haynes. Can somebody look at theres and tell me which colours join to which please - theres only 3 wires either side of the plug but looking at the wring digram in the Haynes, different colours attach to different colours, if that makes sense - ie, there are 2 brown/black wires but they don't go to each other! My van now won't start and I'm working my way through the possibles, but I think the ignition "module" may have gone. Cheers guys

Re: Idle Stabilizer Wiring
You're right, they don't match.
If they have been connected wrongly then the possibilities of 'blown parts' are probably the hall effect device in the dizzy or the ignition module.
Would probably start with the hall sensor first though as it's the most sensitive device in the circuit.

Re: Idle Stabilizer Wiring
The thing is, it was running, albeit a bit rough, so I adjusted the tappets, replaced some pushrod seals, and made sure all the breather pipes were ok and not split. Then it wouldn't start or even sound like it was going to catch or firing. I did the tappets a couple of weeks ago cold, so yesterday I did them when they were warm, both times 1.5 turns in from touching, so I don't think it was that. I think it's either the ignition module or the dizzy or even the coil, but I wanted to check the wiring first to the 2 plugs. He deffo did it wrong compared to the Haynes but I don't understand why it was still running if it was.

Have you checked for a spark from the distributor?

Re: Idle Stabilizer Wiring
Just checked it and no spark - I had a neighbour turn it over while I held a plug against the engine. All I have is a circuit tester; both sides of the coil set it off with 12volts if I earth one of the prongs whilst touching the coil contacts with the ignition on - also 12volts from the centre terminal! There's no breaks in the mini wiring loom that connects the dizzy, and the ignition module. And when I try the ignition module all the contacts seem to set off my circuit tester - it has a battery in it and when you press the button it beeps if the circuit is completed. And this is what it did with all the contacts on the module except for pin 4.
I think it's the module, but I can't be sure so does anybody have any ideas?
