Okay I've just got back from my holidays after addressing sevearl oil leak as described in annother thread. In total I drove 891 miles in my trip from Leeds then Bath, down to Exmoor then back up to the Breckon Beacons, down to the New Forest and up to Leeds again.
Over this total journey I used about half a dipstick of oil (half way from max to min). The engine is clean and dry on all sides so I'm guessing I have exhausted my oil leaks.
What do you reckon? Is a half a dipstick of oil in 891 miles too much oil to be using? This is a reconditioned engine with about 4000 miles on the clock.
Thanks Llamapup

Re: 1.6TD Oil Consumption
I usually drive 5000 km before the oil level hits the lower marker (then I change the oil it's cheaper than buying a litre).
Yours does sound a tad excessive, do you drive it hard?
If you drive it gently it may not have bedded in yet.
You have a relatively "new" motor, mine also used more oil at first.
It settled down at about 10,000 kms.

Re: 1.6TD Oil Consumption
Hello,
I'm not sure what is 'normal' for a 'normal' JX (if there is such a thing!), I seem to remember their being a post on here somewhere which said that even VW said that a certain amount of oil eating was normal. Just cannot remember the numbers... maybe worth a search.
One thought (other than it's running in as said above) - was the turbo replaced as well? I am no mechanic but if this is not all set up perfectly (or just old) could eat some oil - their is a high pressure oil feed and return through the turbo.
My advice is keep monitoring the oil level - as long as you keep it between the marks I guess it will be okay. I always keep at least 1 Ltr of oil spare in mine to top up on long journeys. Wherever it is going the extra new oil is like a constant slow oil change...so cannot be that bad

Re: 1.6TD Oil Consumption
Thanks for that. I did get a new turbo when I replaced the engine, along with the clutch and timing chain.
I've had a friend drive behind me and he says that there is a very slight puff of smoke on full load up a steep hill in 1st and 2nd gear, but is otherwise running clean. The engine is running really well too. It pulls and revs really well and runs nice and smooth.
I was driving it a bit hard on the 900 mile trip that used half a dipstick of oil. I'll keep an eye on the oil though. Hopefully it is just using a bit from running in.
Thanks

This is not uncommon, new cars come with fully synthetic oil. These oils are so good that they do not let the engine "bed-in".
You either have to thrash the spuds off the car to get the engine to "bed-in" or change the oil to a semi-synthetic.
