where next?

Post by wookey »

ok, im satisifed my head gaskets gone on my KY 1.7 Diesel 140 000 miles

so what should i do. option 1 is to change te headgasket. I guess fairly straight forward, however, i dont know how long the vans run for before i got it.. so whats the potential damage. i understand you cant skim a diesel head and since im sure the head blew across a oil\water way im will the extra volume of oil/water have done lots of damage to the engine with the extra pressure caused?

option 2 is easier.. drop that out put a newer 1y in. id like a aaz etc, but theres more chance of finding rocking horse crap than getting a low miler aaz!

thanks t3 gurus

one goat etc etc sacificed in advance :)

Is it overheating? or is it just mixing oil and water?loosing water?

not over heated yet, loosing water yes

theres a grey sludge in the rocker breather, but not lots, pipe does not seem blocked.

there seems to be alot of oil in there also after 10 mins or so, oil will dribble out of the dipstick, presumably the water in the oil is causing it to exit somewhere

Check the oil cooler before pulling off the head, they are the main cause of miss diagnosed head gaskets failures accross the vw range. They are easy to test if you have a pressure tester for the cooling system. Get engine hot, remove oil filter, remove 27mm nut holding on oil cooler, let the worst of the oil run out of cooler, now put pressure tester on coolant bottle and pump it up, you are now looking for water coming out of the oil side, as the engine cools down keep checking it until its cold. This method should show up a bad cooler unless the leak is tiny which by the sounds of it yours is not.

andysimpson, i just spent the avo doing that. results are annoying..

warmed up the van, left it on for 40 mins and
done what you said, but nothing ran out, i pumped up the water pressure to 18 PSI over the hour while i i watched and waited the pressure only droped to 14 psi, which i dont think is overly bad and could be just a bad seal on the top of the tank.

the oil level was high, well past the 2 raised dots on the dip stick (hi and low?)

what ive done is let out the oil back to down to the top bump on the stick.

the oil i've let out ive put a bit in a jam jar. I figure if its full of oil and water, it will seperate over the next day or so.

just lost what next, compression check? sniffer on the water? i guess ill see if the oil separates. wondering if its else entirely!

thanks \

It was worth a try. The slight pressure drop will be engine cooling so pressure reducing.
If it runs good and without smoke a compression test won't tell you much.
Sniffer in water is unlikely to give positive result as it just seems to be oil and water mixing not combustion gases.
One other possible thing to try is remove hoses from oil cooler and connect them with some pipe, clean everything up and see if they mix again, if they do its defo a head related problem.
