Tinware - should I have it?
Just come across a pic of some tinware that I don't have on my engine - but I'm not sure if I should - it's a 2 litre a/c CU BTW

Thanks for that/those replies - Most of my tinware is in place and in good nick - it's just that one particular section (K) I haven't seen before - anyone got a piece like that on a CU to confirm it exists on a UK spec van? (the pic is from a USA website) - if so any for sale?

It seems to be at the rear of the engine and lowdown - described as:
K. 070-119-227KU Muffler Heat Deflector, Used 1980 to 1983
So I'm guessing that would suggest it keeps the hot air coming from the silencer and lower part of the engine from being recirculated back to air intake zone.
There is another version of it (albeit a slightly different shape) in this pic:
The bit at the bottom!
Let me know what you think - anyone??

Mine doesnt have one either-nor any evidence that it ever did! One thought-given that a lot of US spec vehicles had catalytic converters, could this merely be a US only heat deflector to cope with the high heat a cat. produces?
Certainly, without it, the existing tinware completely encloses the top of the engine, which is the main idea so I cant see a problem.

When you find out if you should have one and where it goes let me know...I haven't got one either.
Mind you neither did the scrap ones in our local (43 miles away) scrappy have them either.

Hi All,
My 2L CU had this plate fitted when I first got it but it was rusted out. When I dropped the motor to fit a new clutch it fell apart. The engine has always tended to run a bit hot, (110C but peaking at 130C whe stuck in traffic). Maybe this has summit to do with it. Be interested to find a replacement.

No not strange at all, it was a heat shield for the exhaust nothing more than that, it disintegrates within a couple of years of service or they were chopped of by the mechanics as they rattled as they rotted and the later air cooled were never fitted with them, it is not a functional part and plays no part in cooling the engine what so ever, so don't worry about it.
If your motor is overheating it is not this part it is somethng else.

Thankyou Steve - I hoped someone with much experience and authority like yourself would declare their wisdom over this issue; which is much as I thought/hoped - I had visions of fabricating something up resembling this part but won't bother now...

i don't want to offend you steve, but are you saying that the design engineers at vw fitted it as an ornament? surely it had some purpose.?
as for overheating Aircooled engines, it could be just about anything
but the simple checks, like mixture, timing, and a complete seal around the tinware, and complete and good nick tinware would be good things to check
