Aaz cam belt timing
Hi can anyone give me some advice. I've just changed my cam belt it took me a whole day to do and after finishing it ran really rough and smoked like an old bus. I've never done one on a diesel before. I know that on a petrol engine it will not run if the cam timing is 180 degrees out. After checking on some forums i found that diesels will still run but badly if 180 degrees out, so i spent another night swearing at the cam belt as it magically moved 1 or 2 notches everytime i rotated the engine by hand whilst trying to rotate the crank 360 degrees to alter the timing. After finally managing to get it all lined up and tightened i started it up and drove round the block. It's a definate improvement but not as good as before i did the cam belt and it's still smoking (black) alot. Has anyone else had this problem? After thinking about it i dont think rotating the crank 360 would make any difference on a diesel as there's no ignition system connected to the crank so 1 rotation is going to be the same as the next, is it not? is it possible that who ever fitted the cam belt before me didn't have it quite right and adjusted the fuel pump to compensate? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

problem sorted i lined up wrong timing mark on flywheel there's 3 marks and it's the notch in the middle of the 2 pointy arrows that needs to be lined up. thought this might be some use to others who may have done the same.
