T4 Syncro rear diff - repair or replace?

Post by GreatCrestedNewt »

I'm sneaking in another T4 Syncro query:

I've just opened up the rear diff on my T4 Syncro to discover the crown and pinion in a very sorry state. I have discovered that replacement parts are available from VW but at prices that exceed the value of the van. The code of the diff is DFC - the helpful chaps at SyncroSpares advise that I need to find a replacement with this code. If anyone can offer leads on affordable diff repair or replacement then I would be very glad to hear.

Also, I now have the EKTA exploded parts diagrams for T4 drivetrain if these are of use to anyone embarking upon similar repairs.

Will she drive with the rear diff out?

I would speak with Aidan our resident gearbox guru, he might have contacts with alternative sourced parts. May take some time for these to appear on the newer T4 though.

Could try German E-bay for a unit.

When CJ was running a T4 syncro he broke a few for parts. Not sure anyone is doing that now.

Simon.

Good luck.

There have been a few T4 syncro 'breaking' adverts on ebay recently so there might be some spare diffs out there. Probubly 2.4D models, don't know how many different diff ratios were used in T4s but they is probubly only 1 or 2 ratios for each engine type so finding a van with the same engine could yeald what your after. Probubly just an inlarged version of the golf syncro transmission so anyone who rebuilds them might feal at home fixing one?
