Long wheel studs

Post by syncropaddy »

There has been a bit of chatter in the past as to how long wheel studs should be fitted so I took a few piccies of how I did it ......

Removal
Drive flange off and in a suitable press. Hitting these studs with a lump hammer is not the way to do it really ..... It took four ton pressure to crack them which is nothing.

Fitting
I opted to press each long stud in individually - 3 ton pressure to seat them home

Fifteen minutes later .......

Now if you have nice chrome wheel nuts for your alloys and Mefros like I have, you need to drill the cap off them ..... in a lathe preferably

And then you need to tap them. The sharp eyed amongst you will notice that this is a cutting tap and the nuts have rolled threads which are stronger. I didn't have an M14x1.5 roll tap so I cut them. Hand tapping 25 (5 spare) of these was the most boring thing .....

Job done.
