Some later, high spec vans had power steering.
Origional equipment is expensive, and with the engine (power steering pump) a long way from the rack long pipes are required.

Some members have fitted electric power steering, I'm sure someone will come along with better Knowledge.
Meanwhile try a search.

A mate of mine had it fitted to his van (RHD) recently,by Mick (NW_VW) who's over near Preston.
Not cheap but he reckons its money well spent

Hi Guys, im having a 1.9td engine put into my 1990 Camper to replace the 1.6. 8) As my van doesnt have power steering (means the girlie cant drive it  ) i thought id get that sorted too (get a 1.9 with a pump on) Couple of questions, where is the best place to get a steering rack? i can only find exchange ones. will the pump be gutsy enough to keep pressure as its got to run back to front? (someone said i would need an intermediate pump?) what else would need changing?
also want to get the body work up to scratch so will prep it right up (used to be a painter) prior to blowing it over. Any suggestions for the best sprayer to use without a compressor? best paint at good prices? how many coats (same colour) what sort of drying time between each coat?
lots of questions i know, but what a fantastic find this site has been. I dont have the know how to do any mechanical stuff, so will be getting a mechanic mate to do that, but you guys are the real experts and have already helped me :D
im all busted up at the moment after being knocked off my Triumph Speed Triple by a stupid driver......my beautiful bike written off, broken leg, 4 broken ribs, punctured lung and 6 busted vertebrae in the spine  (can still walk though :D ) so while i am immobilised i thought i would learn more about my van and get the work done!
anyway, enough blathering,
thanks for your time and experience
Neil

I have a refurbished lhd rack and pump and a reservoir and engine bay hoses for a wbx but not the front to back pipes, though I believe that DevonDave can supply these new in flex pipe of the correct type.
Brickie has the bracket for the pump somewhere to be copied, I can get that back.
I run p/s myself so these are spares for my van but the bank manager would like me to sell them...tempting fate...but needs must
call or pm if interested

Funny, I thought you had got that bracket back until last week when I found it down the side of one of the shelves in the stores!
It's not in the parts back being cleaned!

Not that I'm going to, but I've always wondered can you do the conversion to an Aircooled 2ltr CU, using the standard VW setup that is?

Hi guys, since i last posted a q about power steering, i have had electric column power steering fitted. WOW! such a simple, cost effective and efficient alternative to sorting all the bits for a pumped system...and it works like a dream. £500.00 supplied and fitted and it takes about 4 hours to fit! i can thoroughly recommend it. guy who did the work is in Bristol, his name is Tim tel: 07810 320464. very knowledgable, very helpful pleasant guy too.
