legacy twin turbo....the story so far

Post by jimmypatch »

Im starting this thread as a guide for anyone thinking of putting a twin turbo into a t25. My smokey old JX diesel was on its last legs and had to go. seeing as I already had a tdi conversion on the go in another van I decided to go down the Subaru route. I scoured ebay for a cheap Subaru. The only one that came up cheap enough was 1995 legacy gt auto, the box was dead so it was going cheap. The previous owner was only 50 miles so he trailered it to me. I set to work removing the engine and loom which was not fun, especially the loom which took forever to trace back and remove.
The JX dropped out with relative ease and was sold on for nearly as much as the Legacy cost me! bonus.
The twin turbo has sat in my neighbours garage for some time now. so this weekend i decided to finish off the engine mounts and fully fit the RJES engine mount cross member. in order to fit the engine the battery tray had to go. I have not yet got the engine to sit on the mount as the turbos catch on the bulkhead so that has to go next.
Jobs to do
Send off the loom to TSR Racing.
Custom fabricate some adapter pipes to fit the turbos to a charge cooler.
fit charge cooler pre-rad
fit oil cooler
fit uprated solid state fuel pump
try and figure out the twin turbos vacuum control box.

More to follow soon with pics
Now where did i put that angle grinder :D

Why are you using TSR when the best product and customer service is RJES. You wont get too many positives about TSR if you ask around.

Hi all
im using tsr as rjes have not wired a twin before. The engine is currently dangeling in the engine bay at the moment so pics would not be very good. I need to cut out the bulkhead in order to squeeze in the turbos. Just for info i ran some vehicle stats through VHPA 3 and it said the van will run an 8 sec 0-60 time nice!
when ive chopped out the bulk head i'll drop the engine onto the mount and take some pics.

I cut the bulkhead at lunch. Ive just dropped the engine onto the mounts (it went in very easily). I can now get a good idea of how the engine is going to sit, the sump is about 5 inches clear of the floor so no need to chop it. The exhuasts just clear the engine mount cross member.
pics will be uploaded soon.

Well done TSR stuff aint bad at all i fitted all mine using there adaptor plate and fly wheel and never had a problem yet! The biggest problem your gonna have is heat build up in the engine compartment! Lots of reflective heat sheeting needed!

:rofl Might want to think about a gearbox rebuild before trying that... although you ought to consider it in any case... a 20 odd year old gearbox with plenty of wear wont last long with all that grunt going through it...

Yeah ive got 5 inches of clearance im dead chuffed with that as i thought id have none!
Im not to bothered about the gear box when it blows i'll throw another one in.
a rebuild will cost about a grand i bought my last box for £50 so once i go through my 20th box i'll get a rebuild

I know what you are saying about gearboxes.

I have a AU box at present with a spare DK box, but hopefully the sale of my mini will allow me to get the correct box from 'the man' Talbot as he has talked pure porn to me for delivering the power to the black stuff. At present I can not power my Cossy motor as 220bhp will barber pole my layshaft. Boooooo. But it does not stop there, once you have a box sorted you will naturally find your next weekest link which are the CV joints.

It is very easy to stick a big donkey in a loaf of bread, its getting the power down which it the important thing as you dont want to hit the loud pedal to a horrible bang and the slow sign as you reach for the red triangle switch. LOL.

Well RJES have not been helpful in supplying the bellhouseing (3 months late) so I have gone with an adapter plate and modded flywheel from TSR.
it arrived next day!!! All those thinking of going down the bellhousing route should consider these long delays.
so i now have the modded loom and the adapter plate and flywheel. just need to fabricate an adapter to allow the twin turbos to mate up to the chargecooler. I'll post some pics when its in.
