accelerator cable nightmare help please!!

Post by tezza »

as some of you know my 1900 petrol water cooled blew on the way back from the lakes 3 weeks ago,i whipped the engine out , cured the problem (water jacket gasket),and while i had it out changed the clutch and fitted a new exhaust, when fitting the acc.cable back i noticed a fray so i fitted a new one , following the idiots guide better known as haynes manual i dutifully pulled the piece of string through and fitted the new cable but it seemed to be too tight and the engine revved at about 2000 revs on tickover!! the cable was not going through a straight line to the pedal this seems wrong to me and the cable was frayed where it came out over the petrol tank ,I know this is going to be difficult to explain but please have a go guys and gals as im desperate!! THANKS :?: :(

is the nipple correctly seated in the cam ?, otherwise is it caught up in the water pipes ontop of the gearbox, rather than taking easiest route to the carb. If the rear is ok then it will need adjusting at the front, get a colleague to pull the pedal up (or wedge something to hold it at upmoast position (and check that relay rod is firmly fitted to pedal, it's a push fit) while you clamp the end pin in the pivot clamp underneath, you want to just take up the slack with no pretension. 8mm spanner and torch and craned neck required to see what you're doing, but you know that. There's usually about 1/3rd of pin sticking out, as cable stretches you adjust it this way too, but it should be 10 years before it needs it, if at all.

[cheers mate, the back half is ok ,problem seems to be the route the cable takes from the end of the black tube where it bolts on to the chassis up to the pedal. ive put it where it was before using the string method but i think it was wrong before , hence the chafing,on mine it goes from that chassis bolt thru a 6or7 mm hole then over the petrol tank then comes out between a thing like a chassis leg then to the pedal but it doesnt seem the right way to me ,too much of abend in it .thanks for your reply :D
