hero to zero

Post by tezza »

just come back from a weeks holiday in coniston, the bus went superbly for 841 miles until lancaster on way home. engine overheated a bit in traffic then stopped at traffic lights and wouldnt start. then noticed smoke pouring out the engine bay, evacuated wife and dog (dog 1st obviously!!!) then went to attack fire with extinguisher fortunately no flames just smoke. so r.a.c. back to swindon.after whipping the engine out to fix the water jacket gasket which had split, i thought as this a lot of work i may as well fit a reconditioned engine firstly is this the right move as i might as well change the clutch as well, and secondly where do i get a reasonably cheap recon not s/hand engine.cheers lads and lasses all info gratefully received ,tezza :?:

Am in similar position - but not capable/prepared to drop engine myself. (Am afraid of bu&%ering it up and being left with it even more knackered and immobile!)

Water is not being held by the jacket seal (LH side). I was also thinking of recon unit - but from my research and a chat with Steve (gasure) some posts and a chat with a local decent mechanic I have used before......I am towing it in next Monday - he will drop - and take heads off* - we will decide from there whether to put back together with fresh gasket set etc (Brickworks sell the recommended Elring sets) or if the heads are beyond repair (* or the taking the heads off leads to snapped studs etc) we will look to go down the recon route.

My reasoning is that the engine appeared in rude health (not fast - but capable) - if all goes to plan - new exhaust and prob clutch whilst the engine is out.

On the recon side - having read everything I can find on the forums on Remtec, Vege and Elite - If I need to I will speak to the Elite guys. Someone will no doubt come back saying they are crap and don't go there - but I reckon there are plenty satisfied customers out there too.........

Good luck whichever way you go..
