heater problems

Post by unhappy camper »

Hi I am new to this site and hope someone can help me. I have a 1985 T25 water cooled and the heater blows hot all the time. The cable is still intact and seems to move freely. I've traced the cable under the van and it is connected to some type of valve, which move freely. I've moved this valve backwards and forewards by hand. When I move it to what I think is off, the heater still blows hot. I haven't been able to find this part any where on line. Also the blower only works occasionally, could this be a dodgy switch?
Sorry if this has been asked before,I hope someone can help. :D

exactly the same probs we got, even the switch problem.

I put a post on here too. I managed to shut the flap off for hot air. When you pull off the black plastic panel under the dash in front of the gear stick you will see the outlets for the hot air. There is a bar that controls the flaps. Ours needed a bit of adjustment to shut the flaps.

Hope this helps a bit?

Our switch is still intemittant though. Guess it needs a new one?

Drop your spare wheel down and look up to behind the dash to the bulk head jobby.
There is a rubber pipe with a valve fitted in line that is connect to a a solid steel wire
Could this be the culprit for the constant heat :?

exactly as krisis said. It's the valve thats worn. It's a bit of a sod to do and you will get wet so do it when the coolant is cold. If you're quick you won't get too wet. I think the valve's about £20 from VW - well it was about 5 years ago.....

We tried that...got to the valve when replacing the coolant pipes. Steel wire pulls a lever that rotates a plastic ball inside the valve. It all worked.

valve was clear and free moving. Problem with mine is that the cable appears too short, and the lever won't stay in the cold position - always returns to the middle. So sommat is picnhing my cable behind the dash.

Do you have complete free movement of the hot/cold slider in the cab?

You can try adjusting the sliders you can adjust where the cable is clamped, did mine while the dash was out, and can now turn the heat off.

Also the dash was out to sort the fan which worked intermittently, it turned out that the carbon brushes were sticking a drop of wd40 on the brushes and a bit of jiggling and the fan is now perfect worth a try before lashing out on a new switch or fan.

In reply to Ermie 571 the slider on the dash goes all the way to the cold position and about 3/4 the way to the hot position. The valve seems to be moving freely under the body,I can move it by hand. I think I 'll have to get the part and get wet puttting it on. We are off to the lakes this weekend so will have a go next week. Thanks for the part number. anyboby got a web site address where I can order this part.
Thanks Don

if you ask very nicely....and pm me your address....I think I have a spare one in the garage, one in which the little plastic ball moves with the arm.

can be put in an envelope tomorrow morning if you want second hand...

ummm- if the valve moves freely...why would you want to be changing it?

I may have misunerstood - but you are always hot, even when slider on cold? Whe we tested mine, moving the arm and the attached rod, did move the slider in the cab, and when it wasn't connected to the pipework we got full travel on the slider. But when connected, the rod won't stay in cold.....its as if its too short! Will check out the clamping thing, and the kinked rod thing as advised by a friend at the time.

With regards to ordering the part (from VW), look on the net for vw van centre, give your local one a ring, ask for parts dept, ask chap/chapess name, remember it, give them the part number, pay over phone, go and collect 2 days later, when you ring back for other parts ask for same chap/chapess, as they will prob remember you, and you need someone that wants to help. They will tell you stock availability/ or obsolete/ and time fo delivery, as some obscure parts come from Germany still.

Equally some parts will be available from Just Kampers, and German and sweedish and French, Europarts etc. Phone up with the vw part number and tey should be able to help, always worth ring vw first, as sometimes they are not as expensive as other sellers would have you believe.

heater problems

Post by unhappy camper »

The heater is hot regardless where the slider is positioned. I thought maybe the valve was knackered even though it is moving. I've give it a little gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet, just to see if it was sticking. I took Scoobie out for a short ride and the heater doesn't seem as hot. I really need to go for a good run to see if it has made any differance. Thanks for everyones interest and replies,Don
