new tailgate struts

Post by dublemel »

Hi all, I finally relented and got some new struts (from veedubmachine -very good service and price). I was accumulating too much scar tissue on head!. All went well . propped up tailgate , circlips off the lower spade type end , little wire clips out of the upper ball end ,should just pull off . Absolutely no way would they come off , assorted levers ,pliers hammers etc. no help at all. By sheer fluke I turned them to point vertically upwards and they just fell off !!! They would not come off in any other position. This may be common Knowledge to all except me , but I've never seen it mentioned , so I thought I'd post it to save anyone else an hour or so on a 10 minute job.

I'm sure I saw it on here somewhere but a cheap and effective fix is get two lengths of copper tubing 223mm long and slide them over the two struts. When tail-gate is open these 'lock' the struts in the fully expanded positions. No more head banging! :)
