4 speed 1.6TD

I'm looking at a 1989 camper at the moment that has a 1.6TD engine that has been fitted with a new 4 speed gearbox.

Will this affect the mpg greatly or the engine?

Personally I have found that the 1.6td can struggle a bit with a fully laden camper, depends really on good the engine is and how fast you want to go. No idea about the gear box issue though.

in theory a new gear box should increase the mpg and put less pressure on the engine but to be fair it will be slow and won't make a huge ammount of difference to preformance! but a new box may give you peice of mind!!

4 spd box appears more long lasting--make sure the gearbox matches engine(ie its not too low geared) not much difference in fuel consumption between 4 or 5 spd boxes--

The 5speed always came with a TD. This is die to the nature of the beasts's torque(I believe)
What the 5 speed has is a low bottom gear for starts on hills etc, or fully laden.
without this you may be better parking pointing down hill , not up!

type 091/1 4 speed has a 0.85:1 top gear ratio, but the 5 speed has 0.82:1 from Nov 83.
but axle final drive ratios were different for TD, TD quoted as 4.83:1.
These all sound pretty close for an old van , the thing that counts is how knackered is the engine?, when new it would do 85mph on the flat.
sadly for me that was a long time ago now, and I drive it far more sedately.

Thanks for the replies

The engine seems in very good nick. It's a rebuilt one on 50k and the clutch, timing & v belts and all filters have been replaced and the injectors adjusted.

I got 86 mph (indicated) out of mine (88 1.6TD 162k miles) just before Christmas, and coincidentally just before one of the exhaust manifold gaskets went!!!! Completely unrelated of course!
