cracked windows

Post by Ruby »

Hi folks,

Two of my plastic double glazed windows have small cracks in. Does anyone know of a fix for this other than replacement?

You should be able to stop the crack creeping further by carefully drilling a small hole(1mm or 2mm) where the fracture ends.....

Cheers, I have done this with castings in the past with some success however, what I want to do is seal up the cracks, I wondered if anyone had used anything like the glass bond stuff they used to repair (maybe still do?) windscreens with.

crack on inside or out. If outside , you may be able to weld , but see a motorbike repairer for that . If its inside , easy . Take out window. you'll see that the window is double skinned so cut with craft knife the sealent and seperate the inside . Go to B and Q get a sheet of perspex and mark up , cut carefully then re- seal the new inside piece using fine bead of silicone clear and clamp together , go to bed , then next day refit window. Did mine and works a treat . you can even re drill a small hole for the plastic plug from the original for the vent hole.

Hi Sevy,

Hey, that really is a good idea. I have a cracked double skinned high top window in my Westy Atlantic. The crack is on the inside so I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks! :)

Finally repaired the inside skin on the front window in my westy atlantic high top. Word of advice to anyone planning to carry this out: lay the perspex out on a flat board and cut the perspex with a disc cutter.....DO NOT use a stanley knife or attempt to drill the perpex, otherwise there's a good chance that it will crack. Alas my first attempt went badly wrong and that is what happened. 2nd attempt I used a disc cutter and everything went perfectly well :D

hot glue also does a "cracking" job on these, after you do the drilling a small hole thing, fill it up with hotglue....
