2.0cu air-cooled oil leak / oil volume

Post by alexhd57 »

So, I acquired my van in the knowledge it had a bit of an engine oil leak, and lived with this for a couple of years.

Last summer I felt it was getting worse, with the back of the van becoming dotted with oil spots after a decent run. So I have started (as a novice mechanic tinkerer) trying to tackle this. I've replaced the rocker cover, and then push rod tube seals on the right side where there seemed more evidence of the problem. I then topped up oil as the level was at around the minimum on the dip stick. To my relief the van started and drove again after my tinkering, but I still have a leak, and if anything it might be more. A board under the engine has confirmed I'm loosing some just by gravity with the van parked up. I'm now wondering is the leak from an area above the push rods?

I'm also confused about the volume of oil the van should have. It seems to be stated as 4 (4.5)l in some places but elsewhere 3(3.5)l. This makes me wonder if topping up the oil has overfilled it and explains the fresh leaking?

Any tips or advice much appreciated!

If you're worried about oil levels it might be worth checking it has the correct dipstick for a CU.

Don't know if this will help (I can't vouch for any of this as I don't have a CU):

- This link suggests an overall length and a part number:

- This link suggests pretty much the same length but includes the Max and Min levels:

Thanks guys. I think my next move will need to be drain some oil and see if that improves the situation!

I'll check my dipstick length too. Odd though as there is definitely conflicting info on the volume out there, I think even my Haynes says 4l.

Haynes states 3L for the CT, 3.5L for the CU, both including filter. Never seen 4L mentioned. Over filling is likely to make any leaks worse, but on the up-side reduces tappet noise at start up!
