2.1 DJ playing up when hot

Post by burnzdog »

Hi All

I'm looking for some help with a problem that has reared its head again. Couple of years ago my 2.1 DJ started playing up, started to breakdown under load, misfiring and not starting when hot. This was eventually resolved by what I only assume was cleaning up the earth wires. At the time I wasnt totally convinced by what had sorted the issue but I had cleaned up all the earth cables and it seemed to do that trick.

Having been stood for the winter I have just taken it for the MOT and the same issue has come back. When its cold its absolutely fine, but as the engine gets warm its starts to struggle underload, by applying the accelerator (in gear or not) it starts to misfire and will stall. If i apply the accelerator gently it will just about get through the issue and work. If it does stall and its hot it will fail to start turning over but not firing.

I have changed the temp 2 sensor which has made no difference. I have checked and cleaned earth cables. I have checked air intake pipes and all seem fine.

Being this issue is really only happening when its hot make me feel its a sensor/airflow ECU type issue but i dont really know how to test this.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Check to make sure the Idle control valve is working, might be the AFM track is worn too, its on factory fuel injection?

Being that there is no issue at all when its cold would suggest these are working?

Why do think distributor? And specifically what part of it do you think is failing?

I would suspect the ignition module, tci, 191 915 351 B, failure when hot restarts when cold is pretty much the differential diagnostic for that - especially check the mounting screws are making good contact with the body metal and not just rusty as one of them is an earth, because they stick into the wheel arch they tend to rust

Yes they are a part that fails with the symptoms you mentioned, slowly getting worse with misfire as it gets warmer

You can buy the distributor module and swap it

Replace the whole distributor you mean? Do you know what exactly fails with the distributor to cause this issue?
