WBX water jacket leak temporary fix?

Post by ZsZ »

Hi all!

A friend of mine has a van with 1.9 DG carburetted wasserboxer. It developed a water jacket seal leak just under the intake manifold. The seal is partially pushed out probably by the coolant pressure. It is hard to even check if it is intact or not without removing the manifold.
Obviously the real solution would be a head off and refresh or rebuild, but he has neither the funds nor the capabilities to do it.
He asked me to help to solve it temporarly, but I am stuck a bit.
Is there any in situ hilbilly solution? Some kind of super RTV goo that sticks onto both the rubber and the case?

Thanks!

Not really no, you'd have to take the head off and get new seals on the barrels and the jacket seal. I wouldn't even attempt to bodge it

Thanks, I was afraid of it.
If it was a smaller leak like just dripping a few drops probably a Holt's Radweld would solve it, but it pools quite a bit on the top of the engine.

These additives cause more problems than they are worth. They can block radiators and stop the dalek cap from working correctly. I was recommended K seal a few years back and ended up replacing a couple of caps.

Thanks Rob!

The bodge with RTV goop did not work as he could not clean it dry enough to have the sealant stick to the casting.
On the end he stuffed a rag under the manifold that kept the seal in place and the coolant leak stopped.
He even made a 20km trip yesterday.
It will be fine to do local grocery trips until he gets the rebuild sorted.
