Where are all the speedo cables???

Post by ScienceBoy »

Ours went on our 88 RHD DG and all the suppliers seem to be out of stock for some time. Guess they all get replied from the same place.

Probably the most common manufacturer Gemo not sending them out.
252957803F is the partnr for RHD 2wd.
VW classicparts list it as available.
Might worth to check at local motor factors if they can order other brand than Gemo

Yep - it is only the later clip on cable for the right hand drive that has been out of stock for about a year now.

All left hand drive and early screw-on right hand drive cables are still readily available.

They moved their factory, they have been on order for literally a year.
We've just paid the invoice so expect everyone to have them in the new year.

Where are all the speedo cables???

I’ve got mine now, but I don’t know if that’s the issue. Just took off the hub caps to locate the business end and there’s no circlip on the cable to secure it, and it looks like the hole in the cap has been rounded off. I believe it’s supposed to be square?

Am I right?
How do you get this darn thing off?

Yes it should be square , if its not to badly worn, taking it off and applying a flat punch fron the inside may solve it .

I’ve tried a crowbar. Was going to apply some heat but thought I’d check with the heat and good first.

I usually use two hammers on two sides and pry it off.
The square end might be rounded and it hangs on the groove on the cable

Thanks for that. I have soaked it in WD 40 too. Perhaps a little heat might help.

Couldn’t get the other methods to work. End up using a bit of gentle grinding and it came off a treat

Using my ramps made routing the replacement cable a doddle. I could have screwed then up higher but it worked fine at this height.
