1.9 TDI engine identification

Post by Nistorph »

Hi all,

I’m looking to change the cambelt on my 1.9tdi T25 Syncro and am struggling to identify the engine type and engine number which potentially affects the timing belt kit required.

I have some info from the engine conversion that the previous owner undertook which states the engine is an AHU with engine number 447***. I also have the registration of the donor vehicle, a 1997 golf. When plugging the golf registration into a timing belt suppliers website it suggested that the donor vehicle should have had an AHU with engine number 074***. I have tried to find the engine number and can only find what looks like a plaque with raised numbers on the block beneath the farthest injector from the cambelt. There is nothing on the plastic cambelt cover either. I think this reads 21L95 or similar which doesn’t align with either suggested engine number.

I’m concerned about identifying the engine number as there are two different timing belt kit numbers for AHU for numbers up to 289575 and then 289576 and above.

I’m guessing my engine must be an AHU.

Does anyone know how to work out which cambelt kit is required without an engine number? I think the belt is the same and maybe the tensioner is different.

Any help would be much appreciated. Photos attached for reference including attempted shots of the engine number.

Thanks

Chris

I attach a photo from the manual of 1990, showing the JX turbo diesel engine.
The engine number of the ahu is stamped on the machined area in the same location.

From the pics it is an e-tdi, so AHU is possible
You can fit an early kit to a late IIRC. The difference is in the tensioner.

It is best to thoroughly clean this area to see the whole number, as changes have been introduced to these engines during their production period.

Buy both kits , compare them against yours and return the other , buy them from a local motor factors much easier that way, or pull the timing belt cover off and see if the belt part number is still visible, you will also be able to see the tensioner
