Historic MOT criteria

Hello all,

My T25 campervan was made in 1983 and registered in April 1983. Does this mean it will be MOT exempt now or Jan 1st 2024 or April 2024?

How do I declare my vehicle as MOT exempt?
Your car will need to have been through the DVLA historic vehicle registration process before it is eligible for exemption.

The owner of the vehicle must then complete a V112 form, which can be found online or at your local Post Office. This form’s full name is the ‘Declaration of exemption from MOT’ and you must complete one for each classic vehicle you own. In order to complete the form, you will need your vehicle tax reminder, the log book, and if you are a resident in Northern Ireland you will need an insurance certificate or cover note as well.

Just to confirm - the exemption rolls from the 1st January of the year 40 years after first registration.

Same registration date as mine.

1st April 1983, plus 40 years = 1st April 2023.
Then the next / following qualifying exemption threshold is 1st January 2024.

I have looked at the exemption, and historic status.
The .gov website clearly states that you need to apply for the status to be applied to your vehicle.

It does not imply anywhere that it is done for you automatically.

Thank you, so I will need an mot for 6 months and then apply using the V112 form for exemption on January 1st?

Hi, as far as my understanding goes it is MOT exempt from it's 40th birthday, so now if it was built April 1983. Just need form V112 filling out, assuming the vehicle is not significantly altered. Historic vehicle status, as others have said is from the April following. You cannot tax your vehicle online with the V112, just need to go to a post office, this registers it MOT exempt and you can then tax it online when it is exempt.

Hi again, just to clarify, the V112 is just a self declaration. The historic vehicle status or tax exempt, is available, for you, from 1st April 2024, requires registering first time at the post office with the V112, V5C, tax reminder letter V11, if you have one, and proof of insurance.
I have done mine in the last couple of years and I'm pretty sure this is correct. Happy to be corrected if it's not, wouldn't want to mislead any fellow T25 nuts!!!

Resurrecting this post to see if I qualify yet. V5C states 1st registration Apr 1984, but looking at T3 manufacture dates website mine if I am reading the information correctly was built between 31 Oct 1983 and 30 Nov 1983. So wondering where I stand for tax and mot exemption and what action I can take.

Here’s my understanding: you’ll need to get a ‘birth certificate’ from VW for your van, which confirms the 1983 date, which you can then use to get your V5C amended, and then you can use this revised V5C, with form V112, to get an exemption from April 2024.

Thanks, that makes sense, is there a preferred or tried and tested site that provides this information. I have done more research and DVLA will not accept document proof from enthusiasts clubs etc.

You can either order a Certificate Of Confirmity from VW in Germany here, or you can try emailing the VW vehicle compliance department in the UK at type.approval@vwg.co.uk, who should be able to provide you with a letter confirming the date of manufacture of your van.

When I requested the letter from VW it came in the post very quickly, a matter of days. It was straightforward to send off the V5 to DVLA asking for historic status. (We didn't have the Post Office option as we're on an island, and the PO was shut for refurbishment!) Now MoT, tax and CAZ exempt
