Post by tee3peeo »

So - my engine has finally given up the ghost and dropped an exhaust valve into a cylinder.
Now I have overcome my grief do I,
repair - anyone know a what a ballpark sum would be &  b someone who would tackle it in the Plymouth area?
replace - any thoughts on the best cheapest replacement?
sell - hang up the keys - walk away and live on memories

Depends on a few things; how quickly you want to get your syncro back on the road. How good you are at spannering. Size of your wallet. Consider an alternative engine.

A cheap amazon borescope for £20 will let you know how badly the piston and barrel are damaged. If they're toast then it's probably worth looking out for a 2nd hand engine - either way, it's got to come out of the van really. Someone might have managed to change a piston and barrel with the engine in the van but I wouldn't fancy it.

If they look OK on a cheap camera then it's probably worth a morning spent taking the head off to inspect deeper.

You can do this with the engine in the van. It might come off easily, no snapped studs and you'll find no major damage inside. If that's the case, Brilliant - please send me the first 6 numbers from 1-59 that come into your head. If not, you can then start pricing up what you need.

many thanks Cobblers - good advice which I will follow.
thanks too Maxstu - there’s no hurry, but I only have the roadside on a hill to work at the moment, I’m ok with spannering but I’m getting older and my wallet is very thin these days.

I would pull the engine and upgrade to a stealth high compression 2.1 using all your DG ancillaries.
They go quite well.
I have some good 2.1 cranks, some unused new rod sets, good used DJ pistons. Also new 2.1 cams but they need timing in the case.

thanks for advice SilverBullet,
sorry for ignorance, what is 'stealth HC 2.1'.
I did a brief search and got no hits - grateful if you could give me a steer please,

cheers

Basically a high compression 2100 engine running on your carb instead of fuel injection (Digijet).
I have just swapped in my rebuilt 2.1 from using a temporary early DG 1.9 (still using the Digijet) since early last year.
The difference is very notable. A gain of around 25-30hp all round and useable power. Will likely add a couple of digits to mpg, too.

As Stu says, DJ has a nominal 10:1 compression and a slightly higher lift/longer duration cam, plus the longer stroke crank of the 2.1 means it develops more torque than any 1.9 ever could.
A fresh engine like that on a 2E3 should be in the 90hp/160Nm bracket
