Advice and Reccomendations please? Fixing dodgy work!

Post by therollingbrick »

Hi Everyone!

Spoiler, I'm after bodywork specialists relatively near to Cumbria who are open to fixing some shoddy work.

Image

Heres the story.

I , like most of us here I imagine, fell in love with the VW campervan fairly early in life. My first vehicle was a Citroen Dispatch that I 'converted' myself. Then after a few years of saving I was ready to by a VW bay window. I know, hang on. Upon discussions with my friend (NegativeGravity) he persuaded me that T25's were far superior and he wasn't wrong. So after a good bit of looking I purchased Sweetcorn. After many breakdowns, trips and cups of teas on the side of the road and  just scraping her through MOT's I had saved up enough to sort out the increasing issue of the bodywork.

So I did some research and based off some local trusted sources and a good review I went to see Des. He specialised in classic vehicles he had Bay's in the shop and T25's a few minnis and a mustang all in various states of completion. He advised me that the best thing to do was sandblast the whole thing replace jacking points that has rusted through and new panels. Great news, we agreed that it should be done right as Sweetcorn was a vehicle I wanted in my life for well the rest of it.

I stripped out the interior, which just so happened to spark a career in campervan interiors, dropped the engine took the windows and pop-top off. It was basically a Box on wheels with a handbrake and itsd doors ducktaped shut. And sent jer off tho the sand blaster. She (mostly) came back and went into Des.

I supplied the panels and he asked for some cash for supplies. I happily obliged. About 3 months passed and he presentedc me with some pictures and a bill.
ImageImageImageImageImage
The work was not completed but he wanted paid for where he was upto. My first mistake was here when I paid. This continued for around 18 months until I'd paid a total of 6k with a 1.4k Final bill.

When Sweetcorn was dropped off, I was amazaed she looked so good! The colour was way better than I had expected. I then started looking closer and saw panel lines come and go, bits of filler not sraight and not covered. The raptor paint underneath missing entire sections and in one place painted over a small pile of sandblasting sand.

I wasn't happy. I curated a list of the bits that needed sorting. I got des roubnd and we did a walk around. He took no notes just made excuses and promised it would be fixed. I offered to give him the two pages of notes to match where I'd circled the main defects.
He took it away and got to work, about 3 month later he said would i like to come a check her before he painted her again. I said she was better however there were still seams coming and going and des said he would sort therm before painting. Around 3 days later he was done. I couldn't wait I went to se her and I was dumbfounded when I saw all the th8ngs I'd mentioned to him earlier were all still  there.

My second mistake was here where he was busy with someon else so I just said cheers and left. I then emailed him and said i wasn't happy with his standard of work and was there anything we coujld do with regards to the final bill as I was going to have to take her somewhere else to get her sorted. He offered me half off and I took it as I wanted to get Sweetcorn back and safe.
Since then I ended up buying a house and starting a campervan conversion business (If your interested - viewtopic.php?p=8306222#p8306222) so I ended up putting sweetcorn in storage and trapsed her engine and bits and pieces into the garage attic.

I've deciced enough is enough and its time to get her back on the road so I'm looking for someone to help put me right. Ideally they would check the structural work. I'm now fairly proficient at raptor painting so I'm happy to do the underside. But I'd like someone who knows what they are doing to check the panel work and then repaint my beloved sweetcorn so I can put her bits back in and then fit her out and get on the road!

Thank you in advance for any knowlegder or information you guys can pass on!

Wow.
I can’t help with anywhere in Cumbria only Manchester/Lancashire way.
What I can’t believe by those photo’s is why when they had a bare shell they slapped all that filler on.
Here’s hoping someone local to you can help.
David.

That photo of the Troutbeck Inn takes me back. We used to stay at a site near there in Hutton. We’ve not been that way in the van for a few years, we’ll have to revisit it sometime.

That’s "pooh"! My wife keeps on at me to pay someone to do our van, I’ve just put her off (for years!) by saying I wouldn’t trust anyone enough, now I can show her those godawful photos.

I’d be embarrassed to do work like that and share photos with a paying punter. I’m embarrassed enough sharing my first time welding on here, but crikey!

Can’t help, except to suggest you do it yourself (!) and commiserate as a fellow (exiled) Cumbrian. (Though as I grew up in West Cumbria, Penrith was regarded as a foreign country!)

Thanks David I'll give them a look! I was born and raised in Troutbeck, we will have definately crossed paths at soe point I would've imagined!

Hi Roger, it is heartbreaking, to be fair to Des he didn't share these pics, most of these are mine, to highlight the issues to be rectified. If I'd have been sent these I'd have had her out in a heartbeat, the pictures Des sent were from a much safer 6-8ft.
Its mental that it takes a similar amount of time to travel to the west coast as it does to get to manchester, no wonder we ended up with different accents!

Aye, but fixing the arch on by welding on the seam?

Anyway, the accent in Aspatria? Or ‘Spatry!

I didn’t even realise that was the wrong thing to do, but now you’ve pointed it out it makes totally sense. No wonder my seams come and go, there isn’t a seam now! 🤦‍♂️

The original panel has a flange folded in, that is spot welded onto the flat top of the inner arch, and up the side the flange is spot welded onto the side of what forms the D pillar. (The rear quarter of the van). The panel above the arch is no longer available as a replacement, it comes as a whole with the arch beneath. You can see pics of panels, and have a guess as to how they fit together, on the schofields site

https://alanhschofield.com/ourparts/cat ... -8091.html

or the brickwerks site,

https://brickwerks.co.uk/product-catego ... ir-panels/

and the long threads on the restorations page of this site should help a bit. The more you know about how the vans are put together, the better informed you will be when quizzing the people you are choosing from to do this work.

Are the photos in primer(n/s front arch) after it came back from the blaster or after des had welded it? If its what des has done, Personally id cut your losses hard to do but that will cost big money to get something right, yer i and others could straighten it up with filler to look okay, but id just cut your losses. Obviously you would need to start again, minimum of paint job and major bog(filler) at a minimum. Any body shop will tell you ideally it wants a lot of panel and probably structural welding add that to a paint job and the 7 k you gave des.youl be well into 20k. Youd be throwing money away, trust me, its a goner, sorry.
If the panel work and other welding has been done after the photos, you may be able to straighten it up with filler and some light welding
We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.

Hi Dbz,

That was straight back from the blaster. I’m pretty sure he replaced all 4 of the wheel arch panels. I’m really hoping for some filler work and I may even do the rustoleum paint myself. It just stings that I saved the money to get it done right and I may as well have had a go myself.

Hi Roger,

I’ve had a closer look now and it does seem as though I put a bit too much trust in him. To do it right.

Thanks

Paul,
Have a look at VW T25 in the NW on Facebook , Steve Dawson . Does a good job based near Chorley, not far from Preston .
Had a similar experience to yours, so good luck 👍

I think you could have that tidied up and the filler re-worked to make it fairly presentable and usable
