can't fit spanner round sump plug

Post by Shinnster »

Hi all,

back with another stupid dilemma... but I have fitted a sump plug that has an oil temp sender but there is very little space to attach a spanner to do it up. I managed to nip it up using an open ended spanned vertically, but it doesn't get much purchase.
is there a special tool for jobs like this?
or any hints on how to get it done up

here's how it looks

You may be able to get a thin walled socket to fit. (Might need to be a deep socket also). Or you could even grind down the outside of a normal one until it will fit.

Box/tube spanners. Always useful to have a set on hand.

thanks for the help guys,  got myself a 19mm box spanner and dremel'd off the corners so it fits now.
still seems a bit silly having a part that can't take a regular socket. even thin walled sockets have no chance of getting in there.

I use an appropriate sized stone on a dremel to open up the case recess slightly so a socket will fit inside. Useful when repairing a stripped thread by tapping out for a bigger plug.
