Is the towbar strong enough to use for jacking up the rear of a T3?
I have a good trolley jack and stands,I have previously used the forward most gearbox mounting point but not sure if it’s safe or ok to do so?
Any advise appreciated.
Thank you.

Towbar as jacking point
In a nutshell … NO.
Neither the towbar, nor the gearbox mounting point, should be used as jacking points.
Most people either use the provided jacking points on the sides of the van, by the front and rear wheels, or the cross members just inboard of the jacking points.

Re: Towbar as jacking point
Thank you Clft_d.
I’m trying to raise the van in the front and rear and am looking for the safest method.
As an example, do you raise the rear of the van first?
If the jack is under the cross member, do you place a stand in the original jacking points for the van? Then repeat the process on the other side before jacking up the front?
Sorry if this seems like stupid questions but I really don’t want to cause an accident or damage.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Towbar as jacking point
Maybe worth mentioning what repairs/work you are going to do that require all four wheels to be off the ground. Presume you are doing the work on level and solid ground. I would do either the front first then the rear bearing in mind the handbrake will be innefective when rear is off the ground. As well as axle stands in the area described above, worth checking the area for damage or corrosion. I used to have a couple of old wheels which i put under the sills in addition to axle stands, not for load bearing but as a back up if something failed.

Hi TONYT25T25
I am fitting a Brickwerks gear linkage refurb kit, New fuel lines, and replacing the exhaust.
I have some spare wheels so will back up my axle stands for additional safety.
The van is on a solid, level concrete base.
The van is rock solid in all lifting and jacking points.
Thank you for your support.

Re: Towbar as jacking point
For wheels on jobs I tend to use some old sleeper offcuts. For most jobs it’s high enough. For a bit more clearance I’ve some heavy duty ramps.
