Rocker cover gasket replacement.
Noticed a small oil leak which appears to be coming from the nearside rocker cover. Dripping onto exhaust, so need to replace it. Ordered replacements from GSF who assure me they are cork ones. Seen on line that it is recommended that they are treated with vaseline. Also how much oil can i expect to lose when taking it off, and any tips on removing clips without damaging anything.

You'll lose about 1/3rd of a pint, from memory. Pretty easy job. Vaseline isn't really required but can't hurt and it'll help stick it into the rocker covers.

Have had a closer look at the rocker cover and in the vicinity of the leak there is a part of the cover is slightly misshaped where the gasket slits into,, unsure until i get it off, if a gentle tap with an hammer will correct it.

You will loose considerably less if you jack the van up on the side you remove as you do it .
Rather than Vaseline use multipurpose grease and make sure the mating faces of both the rocker cover and head are clean, dry and smooth .

Re: Rocker cover gasket replacement.
Thanks, annoyingly where i have to do the job is in front of my garage which is on uneven ground, in preparation i have already put the side to be done on a small home made ramp. I also have some sort of cowling near the cover limiting acess to the top of the cover so will have to pop it off from the bottom/undeneath. Intend to use a small crowbar carefully and protected with rubber to pop the clip off.

Job done, easier than i thought, vehicle at slight angle as indicated by Mocki and only a few drops of oil came out. Gaskets coated with GP Grease and fitted nicely. Engine run to temperature and no leaks.

Re: Rocker cover gasket replacement.
Annoyingly the leak has come back in the same area, oil is visible on bottom of cover then drips at front onto exhaust. Pressing against it by hand shows the oil leak more prominantely. I have another gasket but wondering if something else neefs to be looked at. Also read this elsewhere- When you first change a cork gasket, the oil will come through the seal a bit until it finalizes the sealing. The oil itself actually finishes up the seal when it is absorbed by the cork. The oil causes the cork to stretch and create a perfect seal.

New cover, clip and gasket fitted, but leak still comes back when engine off and oil settled. Is there any mileage in using some sort of sealant, hylomar or similar, even tempted to cut a sliver of the old gasket and add to bottom of existing one,. New clip fitted and tight fitting so no slack there either.

Have you considered using a silicone gasket?

Re: Rocker cover gasket replacement.
Thanks again, spotted some on ebay for about £16 , don't mind the expense as long as they solve the problem. Did your ones solve the leak.

Re: Rocker cover gasket replacement.
I didn't have a leak. But as I was changing the covers for some shiny bling ones I used the silicone ones.
