1.9dg starting problem

Post by lukeskywalker945 »

Hi everyone.

My 1989 1.9dg has been sat for a while while I’ve been having bodywork done (approx 6 months)

We fully charged the battery and tried to start it with no joy.

We removed the air box thing on top of the carb and put some fuel directly into the carb because we thought it might need to start to get the fuel flowing again.

It started and ran for about 5-7 minutes just fine. But then just cut out and won’t start again.

It has a spark, it’s had a new fuel pump and fuel pump push rod thing.

It seems to be when the choke cuts out or when it gets to temperature that it cuts out.

Any suggestions or help on how to sort tuis would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Is the choke flap open after the 7 minute run - it should be.

I don't know what the choke flap looks like. I'm not really mechanically minded. I was hoping it would be an easy answer, like replacing the fuel lines etc.

check the fuel pipe leading to the pump.  if it splits/cracks there's no vacuum for the pump to pull fuel from the tank, it just sucks air.  Vinnie had a few unexplained events of cutting out which I traced back to a tiny split in that pipe.  Perhaps take the pipe off the pump and suck the end and see if you get a gob full of petrol!!  Or blow first and listen for leaks!!

Worth checking the pipes have been put back on the pump the right way round?
