Central locking fuse ?

Post by Bison535 »

1990 VW T25 - I had problems with Central Locking and found the drivers side (LHD) actuator was seized up ! so, I have fitted a new actuator BUT still not working and cant find a fuse ?
Can anyone please help ? Where is the fuse located ? Size/amps ?

Thanks
Bill

Looking at the Bentley manual...

Central locking on a 1990 van is fuse No 52, which is in Relay position 23

It is a 20amp fuse, that is supplied from one of the P pin spade connectors, on the back of the fusebox.

Unsurprisingly the wires are red -
current path is...

One of the P connector pins 1mm red wire to fuse S52.

20 amp fuse

Output is a 1mm red wire to a four pin connector (T4).

T4/1 = red wire to drivers door lock (30) terminal
T4/2 = white to drivers door lock (A) terminal.
T4/3 = yellow to drivers door lock (E) terminal
T4/4 = brown to both door locks - ground (31) terminal.

Looking at the relay map -
You should have yellow (20 amp)fuse a few rows above relay position 5.
If you had a fully populated relay panel, it would be-

If you follow a line vertically upwards - relay 11, below relay 5, below relay 17, below relay 23.

Maybe one day I might get it finished

Thanks guys for feedback
Checked fuse ok
Bridged a wire from yellow on LH side to RH side and actuators operated in a continuous cycle !?
Tested relays and found No 42 to be faulty ?
What is 42 supplying ?

Also, relays 22 and 72 ?

Thanks
Bill

The relay marked 42 or 43 is the coolant shortage module.
It puts the coolant warning LED on if the coolant level in the header tank drops too low.

The relay marked 21 or 22 is the indicator / hazard light flasher relay.

The relay marked 72 is for the rear window wash / wipe.

See the image above - the number in brackets is the relay type number.

Thanks very much Aidan and Robsey, a great help !!!
We have now managed (I think !?) to resolve and get the central lock system to work. I put a new actuator in the LH Door ( the original was partly seized ) My T25 1990 is LHD and it appears the key lock on the RH Door is the Master Central Locking Control actuator, i.e. The RH Door key operates both doors, the sliding side door and the rear hatch to access the engine. So I can live with this arrangement !

HOWEVER, ON COMPLETION of the above and an engine run we had some nasty smell and some smoke (overheating cable !???) coming out of the two door pillar vents. Immediately isolated battery supply ! Today's task to investigate and find the fault.
My gut feeling is the problem is unrelated to the Central Locking System (although the sheathed cables do pass through the door pillar vents to get from LH to RH doors.) its possibly the Ventilation Blower which stopped working recently !? A Dash removal job, so I may have to make a new Post on that subject shortly.

Thanks guys
Bill

Both front door motors are originally masters, the side and tailgate are only slaves, 4 wires to the front motors, three to the rears; if you open tailgate or side with key only that door is opened, if you open or lock front doors with key (or push or pull the button with drivers door shut, then all motors unlock or lock. You can lock the van with the side door open as the contacts aren't complete and it will lock when you close it, be aware of this as you can reach in and push the button on the passenger door while you are next to the open sliding door even with the keys in the ignition, all the motors other than side lock, and then you close the sliding door it locks and you can't get in unless you have another key. Ask me how I know
