So I have had a really good again at all the cam lobs and the followers and they all look in really good condition.
Is there a chance the sound could be from an incorrectly timed fuel pump making one the injectors make the sound?

Is it worth taking off all the hard lines and vacuum pump behind again just to check? That was the worst part of the whole job for me

So re set the timing again and pretty sure it couldn't be more in time if tried but noise is still there.

But I may have breakthrough found what looks like damage but no sign of the missing chunks.

Could this be the reason for the noise and what is the solution?

Cheers

Looks like its been like that for a long time  , the chipped out areas would be cleaner looking if recent.

Good point. I suppose even if it was new the bits would have ended up in the sump anyway as no way to really drop down.

Someone suggested getting a compression test done so think I will look into that as I'm at a dead end

Update,

Had it booked into garage and phoned rac to tow it there. Rac man immediately said its the fuel pump overfueling causing a diesel knock and I would have to take the pump back off and send it back to the refurb guy.

Pain in the a***. Thankfully the diesel guy has said to leave it on the van and get it to him as he doesn't think its overfueling as its white smoke and not black.

Will hopefully find out at the end of month when I get it towed up there. Still think the rac should of towed it but hey ho

So final update. Turns out injector number 1 was stuck open and that's what was causing the noise. £30 to fix so a lot better than feared
