UPDATE: OK, new photos now added above. I've just spoken to a previous owner who was told that this engine in it is from an E reg 1.9 diesel Golf (NB: 5 speed BUT the van is 4 speed!) I've been back out over it with a fine tooth comb (looking in all the places where the engine code number is supposed to be) yet still can't find it for ordering a clutch ("SIGH!") :run

The cast-in code on the cylinder head - 028103373J - is a part number for a 1Y head, which ties in with the fact that it likely came out of an '89 Golf - see here.

My understanding is the 1Y is generally installed using a standard T25 diesel clutch setup, as ajsimmo has already stated.

That's a great help - THANK YOU! I've just been onto GSF (as recommended here) and, using this newfound information (ie: 'E' reg GOLF 1.9 DIESEL engine but still no visible engine code to go on) they're saying there's FOUR possible clutch kits for this type of engine BUT ... they don't have any compatible kit in stock. The quest continues!

nice bit of research  :ok you googled the casting number and came up with the listing for the head

weirdly though the 1Y wasn't fitted to the golf till November 1991, and E reg was 1987/88

use a VW T3/T25 clutch 068 198 141 DX, available from Brickwerks  clutch link  and the usual suspects

Yep, it'll be that one.

I don't think I made it very clear that the current engine code is irrelevant. It will be installed as if it's a diesel T3 KY or CS, and the flywheel/clutch will have been swapped over onto the 1Y (or whatever similar variant it is).
OP - You can stop looking for an engine number, you don't need it.

Mr Hutch has done a few 1Y swaps in darkest Herefordshire, might be one of his?
