Opening quarter lights

Post by Brick »

Hi. I am toying with the idea of fitting opening windows to replace the current fixed quarter lights. My main concern is security, how easy are they to prise open for instance? I am more worried about leaving the van while camping and its full of gear. Used vw parts better than aftermarket equipment? Many thanks. 1986 autosleeper.

Not worth the bother IMO. I think I have opened mine a couple of times in all the years I have had the van.

Do they let a nice breeze in when on the move? Thanks for the reply.

I think the last time I opened them was about 8/9 years ago. They probably do let a breeze in but I have never felt the need to use them.

Yup, always wanted them when I had a van without em.
Then bought my Caravelle GL. Used them once or twice before realising they served no practical purpose, the way they open means they just cause noise without any fresh airflow into the cab

They didn't look massively secure, but when you can open the door locks with a teaspoon on 95% of T25s, nobody is going to mess about trying to jimmy a window open.

As it happens, I have a strip of tape on my passenger side one as it whistles. Image

Thanks for the input. Think I will stick with my fixed windows then. Cheers all.

How about wind/rain deflectors instead? Opening quarterlights are getting grossly overpriced.

I do like a bit of fresh air tbh but the wind noise makes it irritating. These may be worth a look at. Thank you.

I bought a set of reproduction quarterlights and the fit was hopless. The problem was that the ferrules that fit in the glass at three locations in each glass were too large to fit. Forcing them in would have cracked the glass.I had to turn them down. when I finally got them to fit it turned out that they were too thick. As they were thicker than the glass they would noty clamp properly and the catch would just spin. They are a tapered cup and cone arrangement too so they cannot be shortened to fit. I ended up using a selection of nylon washers. It all looks OK now but had I known how poor the kit was I wouldn't have bothered.

if you do buy second hand genuine ones remember that a lot of them were from GL vans with chrome trim. if you don't get the full window trim they will have a slot on the rubber seen from the outside.

I bought some non chrome trim rubber seal ones a while back but cant remember where I got them from.
WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough

Hmm am I the only one that likes them then? We have a driver side one which I use quite a lot. It Only whistles if it's only open a couple of mm, and in normal use it's nice ventilation with no noise. Not sure they're essential equipment though
