Tyre recommendation

Post by fryup »

Hi all

Just want to see what sort of tyre people are using on their standard steels need to get some new tyres and was thinking about getting some chunky tyres for winter it’s going on a 87 panel van that I use for work quite a lot so was looking for something with a bit more grip and would be good for the winter as I have some spare steels so thinking of putting them on there and just using for winter

If you don't fancy going the whole hog and getting a set of winter tyres, you could look at General Grabber type tyres, very much an all rounder but not as chunky as All Terrain.
Many decent brands will even be winter rated and carry the mountain and snowflake symbol.

They are OK for loose snow, but not much good on compacted snow, you really need an all season or winter tyre with the snowflake symbol which perform much better in cold conditions.

Just get good winter tyres, Yokohama Y358 used to be my tyre of choice and useable off road on the Syncro, great winter performance and not too soft that you wear them out in 1 summer, but that particular tyre is nla, I don't have a truck on the road at the moment so not sure what the choice tyre now is

I bought a set of Toyo Open Country AT+ the other day for my work van.
Same size as my Syncro so I tried them on it. (215/75/15)

It's a joy to drive on them and they were really not expensive (£55 each).

Can you say where you got them at that price and presumeably you paid extra for fitting?
Any other suggestions as BF Goodies are too expensive.

Not sure what is available there, but try to get the best you can afford.
I had Matador as my first set. Madde in Russia. They were good. When they wore out I bought Falken. They were good too, but only for the frist season. After that they hardened and were not so good.
Now I got Matador again, just installed them. Made in Slovakia. The new design seems to be much softer compound but on the slimy roads today it felt a bit too soft.

I agree with cobblers there. I’ve had the same ‘Open Country’tyres on my work 4x4 pick up truck and they are a great tyre. Not at all noisy on the tarmac, good in the wet and chunky enough to give better grip when I need to go off into the soft fields. Also they are 108/110 load rated. They were on the truck when I bought it and I’ve just got another set to replace them as they are now down to the TWI. Paid £275 (online) for 4 from JJC race and rally in Wrexham. Bit more expensive than Cobblers paid, but they’re 205/16 and that included delivery.

They were from Camskill.co.uk, and I paid my local tyre place £50 to fit and balance the four.

Update I got the maxxis wormdrives in the end really pleased with them so far, as I had some spare steels so could always change them out In the summer if I wanted too. Very quiet on the road no different to normal road tyres and some extra grip and I think they look good on the van
