These Mk2 Golf clocks look ‘very’ similar, I wonder if I can take the speedo spring out of this and move it across?

Went to Dulux trade shop to get some paint ‘made to match’ but they said, “we don’t do car paint”.

So - folks, any ideas where I can get some made? It’s is not factory medium blue LH5U anymore as it’s faded over time.

Friendly local auto parts shop. Autoparts in Thurso used to mix rattle cans to custom colours. Can’t remember the brand, but it must be 10 yrs ago that I used it. Moved away (south) from Thurso 4 yrs ago…

Great minds think alike, I was looking at the very same place earlier today. I’ll pop in when I’m next in Brighton. I normally pop down for Brighton Breeze and I lived there for 3 years many moons ago, so pretty familiar with the place.

I won that speedo on ebay you found me; Cheers!

Nice one!! Was going to say that the mileometer not working is an easy fix - just take off the cog that keeps slipping off off of the spindle, get some pliers and gently twist and 'roughen' up the metal spindle, force cog back on over the roughened area and it should stop slipping off.

I had exactly the same problem with mine and did the above fix and it's still working 8 years later.   :ok

Valve Timing.

Adjusted valves (2 turns after rocker stops), runs like a dream now. Had some popping on downshift due to over fueling. Spark plugs bit black. I knew the ignition timing was ok, so had to be this, and it was. Pretty quick now & very smooth acceleration. It’s just achieved 85mph, that’ll do - for a singlecab.

Spindle had popped out on this replacement, so pushed that back in and the odometer now works. Adjusted it to match my
mileage.

Issue.

When I remove this TAB needle moves freely, with it in it grabs. What’s it for?

6 pin plug.

Well, that’s a fail. Neither speedo works, zero needle movement. not even a sniff. The cable from the hub is well seated, so that’s my next port of call. Speedo cable replacement.

Image

I’ll put a drill on this end, with the hub cap removed to check the cable first. It may just be the hub square locator is worn.

Took the circlip off the cable and removed the grease cap. Put a drill on it, speedo works!

A, the little square in the grease cap is worn out (new cap 251407691A)
B, the speedo cable square end is also worn (new cable 252957803F)

There is a pin size hole through the end of the square cable end, maybe of use.

Radiator not getting hot & therefore radiator fan not working.

Checked the following initially;
1, Fuse #1 30A
2, Relay #53
3, Radiator Sensor
4, Hot wired fan feed (fans ran)

Now realised it’s not electrical if the radiator isn’t even getting warm, none of this would be asked to work, so … that big pipe off the back of the thermostat housing, stone cold. So I have one or more of the following issues:

bad thermostat
bad water pump
clogged pipes
clogged radiator
bleeding required

I’ll remove the thermostat first and run it, see if the radiator gets warm, might take a while. Water pump after, but I’ll pull the output pipe first to see if there’s pressure. Bit of a job, replacing water pumps! It’s new though, so I’m hoping it’s the thermostat.

Last resort will be to look for blockages. However, I flushed the radiator / junction thingy and front to back pipes last year.

Update; I can see the water pump working, from the flow in the expansion tank. So I removed thermostat. Top pipe got warm, radiator got warm, radiator fan came on! Hoorah!

Temperature gauge needle signal comes off 2-pin ‘black’ plug on thermostat housing.

Good job I’ve been driving around in the winter I suppose, hasn’t been over heating too much. I only checked this because the red LED flashed briefly a few times the other day.

Thermostat was ok, system just needing bleeding correctly, so used Baxter’s ‘how to bleed’ notes from The Brickyard. Thermostat is back in and radiator getting warm now, so I hope that’s fixed.

Getting tracking done, it’s done about 500 miles since it’s been lowered, so now is the time.

Image

Had toe-in on the fronts which is to be expected after lowering and some camber, which I’ll sort myself.
