Breather trumpet?
Having dropped my tank to inspect I've noticed the little rubber trumpets on the breathers from expansion tank are split and long past their best.
Looking at them I can't really see how they work anyway as they are straight pass through?
Are they really needed, could they be replaced with a universal breather nipple?

Breather trumpet?
Neither, it’s part no. 321201890
Classed as a gravity valve, but as they have clear line of sight through middle I’m a little unsure what good they really do.

As you know, its a pipe to the valve on top of the vapour container, as listed above. I think the trumpets protect the pipe ends from getting damaged. Pull valve from container, clean it out and try sucking then blowing from trumpet end of pipe. Should work one way only. Sucking. Or least it did on my camper

Re: Breather trumpet?
That’s what I was thinking, if the valve in the tanks is working correctly then there’s probably not much need for the trumpet, as long as pipe is sound.

Re: Breather trumpet?
I don't remeber seeing them when I had my tank out but my brain has processed a lot of poo since then .
But the mention of valve in the first image and the fishtail shape (reminiscent of the classic Velocette exhaust tailpipe) in the second looks a ringer for the flat low resistance rubber bilge drain valve on fast planing boats.
Or am I just overthinking it in that old Beany time wasting way.

Underthinking, if such a word exists, can lead to equally as much time wasting. So it seems to me with most tasks l perform on my camper.

Re: Breather trumpet?
I think those rubber trumpets are referred to as ''Shrek ears'' for obvious reasons....the puzzle is, i guess, if they are pass through and the valve is in on the breather tank, then why
design and fit them?? what were they trying to over come or avoid with them?

I did question that to myself however I suspect they needed something to protect the end of the vent pipes, the tooling for these already existed as used on other VAG vehicles so maybe just an easy off the shelf option?
Either way I think I can rescue the ones I have, while split once clipped in place will do the job.

Re: Breather trumpet?
Black sealant and a tiny cable tie sorted out the shrek ears/trumpets on my camper.
On refitting vapour container l pushed the pipe over inner chassis rail next to the container pipes. Then cable tied loosely to one of the pipes.

Re: Breather trumpet?
Hi everyone.
Stupid question maybe but are the trumpet rubbers referred to here supposed to connect to each other (left and right vehicle side) via a connecting tube or just dangle down.
Waiting for a new fuel tank and want to ensure that I get everything right.
Thanks
Andy

This should answer your question. No 5 on the diagram has me puzzled though.
