Re: Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
How thick is #26?
It should be about 4thou IIRC. If it's much thicker than that, your oil pump end clearance will be much greater than spec, probably resulting in the pump not self-priming, and then lower oil pressure than could be with the correct gasket. Many gasket sets have been supplied with the wrong thickness gasket in the past, and I'm not sure if the suppliers have corrected this very simple error yet.
I may have mentioned this before, and my apologies for banging on about it, but it would be a shame to ruin a new build over 5p worth of gasket.

Re: Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
I don't use the gasket if possible. I bolt the oil pump together and check the endfloat is greater than zero, but no more than 4thou. Then when fitting, totally degrease the faces and apply an incredibly sparing amount of sealant to the area outside the circular channel. Offer up the plate, bed in with a wiggle, remove and rotate, repeat, checking for very even coating without any excess squishing inwards. Fit and torque down (preferably with the correct nuts with built in seals).colinthefox wrote:How thick is #26?

I absolutely agree. That's roughly what I did when I came across the problem. "Incredibly sparing amount of sealant" is the key here.

Re: Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
Push them apart until the ends abut, then put the thin rings above and below, gaps rotated 120° from the join. Check it is sitting abutted and not overlapping before fitting pistons.

Re: Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
Strain relief washer? Ooer. Lol.
I call it the oil pressure relief valve washer. But why is it copper and not the usual crushable aluminium one that comes in a VR set?

Re: Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
I didn’t see the crushable aluminium one in my set ... I will have another look though.
We all need some strain relief from time to time ... but this’ll have to do for now

Build Project: Wilbur’s 2.1 DJ
30mm oil pump (seem to be accumulating 25mm oil pumps)
Did the smear as recommended.
Did the Dirko too. 20Nm Bentley / 25Nm Haynes?
I had to remove the M8 studs (double nut technique, pretty tough to remove) and reseat them for the larger flanged oil pump. I left 25mm of stud proud of the case which left enough for the flange, lid and nut. Sealed the M8 studs in position to prevent any oil leaks.
NB. Engine mounting bar will need spacers now because it will foul the oil pump flange.
