Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
It was showing low oil pressure as stated in previous messages, that was the reason for the garage to change the oil pump. Don't know if this was a good option to solve the oil pressure problem?? Maybe it could have been with correct tappets setting and right oil?? You will know this and tell me if I've been incorrectly advised?
What do you think I should do,
Take to the local garage test pressure change oil and reset tappets?
As your more knowledgeable than me

That's where it went wrong for me, the pressure should have been checked to confirm the oil light after the oil & filter changeGinojasper wrote:It was showing low oil pressure as stated in previous messages, that was the reason for the garage to change the oil pump.
Another oil change and tappet reset won't make the oil light go away.
Get the garage to give you pressure readings from a mechanical gauge.
As indicated in my post
The pressure readings must be taken from the low pressure switch located between #3 & #4 cylinder (near side)
The pushrod protection plate will have to be removed to access the switch, perhaps the last garage did not want to attempt this as two of the exhaust stud nuts need to be removed.
Renewal of the switch is recommended while the plate is off and access available.

So once it's checked and if there is a problem what's the next step?

Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
Since I got the van around 3 months ago.when I bought the van the light was flickering at low and high revs. Since oil pump new oil it's a low revs up to approx 2500 rpm. It has always been noisey on the tappets but not as much now.
You say fix it, what would you say new engine, rebuild etc??
Like I've said before I'm new to the t25 and my mechanical skills are low.
So help of people like yourselves is needed.
The camper is a westfalia joker high top been full resprayed and interior in good condition. Cost me up to now 5500 with spray, parts etc
Would you recommend spending engine wise on this vehicle?
How do you add a picture on here?

Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
No point guessing the next step until pressure is checked
must be checked hot
lots of oil light problems are electrical

Was there any evidence of the recommended twice yearly services (3500 miles or 6 months)?Ginojasper wrote:Since I got the van around 3 months ago.when I bought the van the light was flickering at low and high revs.
.. just curious to see if this is a mechanical issue or an electrical one.
As for the fix, that's results dependant.
The repair option is there but it's a longish process.
For speed of repair, the engine can be replaced, of which there are many choices, Andy at kampershack has some reconditioned engines on the shelf, you could also change it for a more common engine (golf 1800) often described as a more reliable option.. it depends on how deep your love is
It might just need a new pressure switch
5bar when stone cold, settles back to 3.5 pretty soon and has over 1bar when hot at idle.
Touch the throttle and it instantly makes 2 bar and has 3.5bar when running at average speeds (hot is a constant 95 deg. C)

Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
It just seems like a pressure problem as when gets hot tappets start to be noisey?
Could there be another reason for this?
Not sure on the services in the past.
What would be the going rate for engine and fitting?

Does it sound like a complete racket of clattering, or a tack tack tack, or a tick tick tick?Ginojasper wrote:It just seems like a pressure problem as when gets hot tappets start to be noisey?

?
Can you describe it?
Flat fours should sound like two grandmas knitting

Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
When first started it sounds great, when it's warmed up and oil light flickering it sounds ticking noise.
Before the oil was changed and pump it was more noisey.
Does this make it any easier to work out the problem?
I'm going over to the garage to see when they can fit it in to check oil pressure and fit new switch

Re: T25 1.9 petrol oil pressure problems
Have the pressure checked properly.
IF it's still low oil pressure (and sadly I bet it will be) then the only realistic options are either a good 'known' formerly appreciated engine (about £700 plus all the bits and pieces to swap it properly ... clutch, any hoses and pipes etc etc plus labour so about £1000+ ) OR risk a 'reconditioned' unit ... here there are 2 choices either a fitted but chancy 'repaired' unit which will be £1500+ or a thoroughly reconditioned unit which is an undefinable price.
IF it's actually got good oil pressure ... Change the oil to 15/40 Mineral (known good grade for these old engines) have the tappets set correctly. Change the pressure switch for the correct one from Brickwerks or VW Heritage NOT GSF or Just Krappers.
I would be looking at the person who sold you this van ... was it a dealer ? If so is there a warranty ? (probably invalidated by this garage screwing around in the dark with it)
Cheers, Ian.

and the switch, it's not a sensor

here's a picture of itchys switch removed and the pressure gauge attached, after the pushrod tube cover has been removed
And the other one is located next to the water pump pulley
