I'd recommend signing up and giving the "Require syncro-driving induction" option a go. Last year's mendipidy meet was my first off road event, and the induction was brilliant, in a big grass field above the main off road area with lots of space. If it's the same as last year, you start as a passenger in Clive's van, then drive your own, and once you're happy with that, you can go into the off road bit and do as much or as little as you want, and quite often Clive jumps in to give pointers. Just driving to the end of the valley and back feels like an adventure the first time you do it
Otherwise, watching is always good fun, especially the trials course that's setup - someone more qualified will have to answer whether you need to sign up or not though I'm afraid.
