jx 1.6td engine water from exhaust

Hi all
Just looking for a bit of advice I just a bought my first t25 as a project whilst the body work is going well I am having a little problem with the jx 1.6td engine when I bought it.It was a non runner when I got it home I tried to start it and a load of water came out of the exhaust so I took the head off and got it skimmed and replaced the head and i still get water coming out of the exhaust but this time the engine will start and run fine but spits water out of the exhaust all the time but before I take the head back off as anybody got any ideas to what else it could be please

are you sure its not just condensation? you would think water making its way through the combustion process would only really come out as steam?

Hi and thanks for your reply lloydy but there seems to be to much water when it first starts about a cup full goes on the floor then when your rev it up more goes on the floor and it just blows white smoke out like a kettle boiling.Theres that much smoke you could hide in it

Ah, so you are getting steam then!

i don't think your meant to skim jx heads? but that aside, if you have a new head gasket and its still doing it you either have a cracked head or a cracked block. Maybe get the head pressure tested?

I have read the Vw recommend not to skim these heads but if that's is the case why do they make three different thickness of cylinder head gasket I am thinking the same as you a crack in the head or block but I was hoping for someone on hear to give me some miracle cure but looks like the heads comeing off again cheers anyway not going to take it back off till next week cheers again should've got it pressure tested last time

The different thicknesses of gasket is for the amount of protrusion of the pistons due to variations in pistons.

Ask a silly question but ..... is it using coolant?
Of course water is a normal by-product of the combustion process so .... is it using coolant? lol.....a pretty important question really, because if it isn't then where is the water coming from? or more to the point, it can only be water from combustion. If on the other hand the coolant is going down then you are on the right lines with crack testing etc.

Your right it is losing water and I think we are all on the same line of thought that it is a crack in the head I was hoping /wishing someone would have an easier solution but not this time.My way of thinking is that the more you take of the head the thicker the head gasket you put on so not to allow the valves To hit the Pistons.

Had an AAZ in that had had the head skimmed. Had to replace the head and pistons as they'd been hitting each other (splash craters in tops of every piston).
Occasionally you'll get away with a light skim, if it had a 1 or 2 notch gasket and not been done already. If it already had a 3 notch, forget it.
Sounds like your head is scrap now. Should be plenty of good used JX heads kicking about in people's garages from the AAZ diy upgrade folk. Maybe post in Wanted section?

Spot on, OBG. As seen above, the valves run so close to the pistons that the gasket thickness is critical. Some mechanics just tend to stick a 3 notch gasket on to be safe, but with less piston protrusion that can result in lower compression ratio (and resultant drop in combustion chamber temperatures), poor cold starting, lower power and worse economy.
None of that helps the OP fix his coolant loss, but worth noting on the rebuild with new head. Don't forget new head bolts

I think I got away with the skim because I had the one notch on at first and I have put the three notch on now as for fuel Consumption not to bothered about that at the mo just want it up and running can the head be repair if it has a crack in it

no, it'll be scrap if its cracked. Pretty sure you can still buy new if wanted piece of mind.

Try pouring a bottle of 'kalimex K-seal' into the water system.great stuff & claims to seal cracked heads/blocks permanently. its worth trying for a tenner.
most motor factors sell it or its on fleabay.

Cheers Tyneside-T25 never heard of kalimex K-seal but will give it a try like you said nothing to lose do you know anybody that has used it and it as worked for
