1.6d (NA) Cracked Sump Pan (CS)

Post by Ceecee85 »

My sump's cracked. I can't find a replacement- I'll keep on looking but in the meantime:

My question is... What's the best solution to fixing it? Would it be gum it up with something- liquid metal or some such thing, would epoxy cement work? Weld or patch it- is it even weldable?
It's cracked across the sump nut hole so I suspect the nut's been over tightened at some point but that's somewhat irrelevant as it's not fixing it.

All thoughts considered.
Thanks in advance, Steve.

You could use epoxy and glass tissue to repair, but it wouldn't stand up to the stresses of tightening the sump plug next time.

You could get a decent welder to weld it up, but you would then have an expensive machining job to remachine the thread and seat.

You could use epoxy and glass tissue to completely cover over the area with the sump plug glued in permanently, then drain your oil by slackening the filler pipe bolts.

Or get it welded up solid, and drain oil by slackening off the filler pipe bolts.

Or find a replacement sump.

I've used standard Araldite and glass tissue to repair a damaged alloy sump recently and it has been fine. The secret is to remove the sump so it can be spotlessly clean and degreased, then roughed up with a rotary burr. The difficult bit is getting oil out of the cracks. Glass should overlap the damage by an inch all round. Two layers of glass tissue (not coarse mat!) on the INSIDE of the sump.

Get more advice before putting the sump back on, or you can easily end up cracking the other end!

Good luck!

Nice one. That's really conclusive.
I've had the sump off and soaked in degreaser. I appreciate that getting the crud out of the crack it's going to be the challenge to make sure it seals up. I was thinking about just gunking it up and tapping a new drain hole in. :ok
