Older and newer DG engine compatability
Hi Guys
Sorry to bother you with something that is probably in the Wiki, but a little pressed for time this morning.
Looking to source a replacement dg engine for my van. Current engine is later dg, but if I source an earlier one with the early exhaust and metal, rear of engine thermostat housing, is it a straight bolt on of newer exhaust, front of engine plastic thermostat housing and I assume water pump to
to match connections to my present setup. I know second oil press switch for the BOD will not be there but I can live with that disabled.
Look forward to hearing from the club's fonts of knowledge.
Regards
Martin

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
yes straight swap, early exhaust can be used on late van, expect a stud to snap if you swap the exhaust.
thermostat housing and water pump are different too as you said so swap them too.
earth the buzzer wire.

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
Did they make a DG with the earlier metal stat housing on the back of the engine ?
I thought only DF's had that setup (but I could easily be wrong

Yep - my 1983 DG has the metal stat housing at the back of the vehicle. It's the item that caused CovKid so much grief when he changed his water pump, and it's becoming one of those "hen's teeth" items.

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
there is a metal thermostat housing for the late DG which goes at the gearbox side of the engine, it's for Syncro

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
Thanks guys
Info pretty much as I thought.
Panic over anyway - engine I'm sourcing is now confirmed as late with the same plastic thermostat housing as on the engine in my van.
Thanks for your response.

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
You need a different temp sensor and gauge sender for the syncro 'stat housing. Both are screw-in.

Yes, I had to make my manifold/carb/choke heaters into manual operation, with a switch in the cab.
The gauge was easier

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
Seems a lot more faff than just fitting 2wd plastic jobby with correct switch and sender?!kevtherev wrote:Yes, I had to make my manifold/carb/choke heaters into manual operation, with a switch in the cab.

Re: Older and newer DG engine compatability
Yes, you're right it was a faff.
But..
It was already fitted to the engine, being a syncro the housing fasteners were blobs of rust.
I chose the lesser of the two faffs.

Ha! "The lesser of two faffs" is how we choose to approach many jobs. Like it, I'll be using that.
