Post by cumbriankeith »

Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this gizmo just spotted on fleabay?

It sounds like a good idea to reduce the cost of gas used for cooking and a propex but without installing a big refillable tank. Is there a minimum amount required when you buy LPG at a filling station? - I've never had to do it, yet

Safe

Post by cumbriankeith »

Mark - reading between the lines, they will only be as safe as the user - it sounds like you need to open the bottle tap after connecting, then close it again after filling to stop the gas whooshing out and spoiling your day by both losing what you're about to pay for and/or setting off a nice fireball!

Any LPG gurus with comment??

Likewise ! I know Disco has a re-fillable system, his is mounted on the side of the van though.

As for when it's full, the pump slows right down and eventually stops ... presumably waaaaaay short of the tank safety pressure.

Not sure how it works, but when you get a Westy OE underslung gas tank filled, it automatically stops filling at 80% capacity, I have some German TUV paperwork for mine showing that it was tested and states the 80% thing tested and working, and some expiry date for the test certificate.
Keep it real.

ye si have one of the yellow gaslow bottles 12litre 6kg ones! are expencive but well wort it in my opinion! eg someone with no bottles will need one to start with to get from callor will £40 for a 6kg, you'll probably want two so you don't run out so thats £80. mine cost a fiver to fill, doesn't have to be empty, and can be filled romotely! i'm hoping i'll be able to fit it in my t4. my other idea was to weld a valve on to a bottle that does fit so that i can refill it! though this little gadget seems much safer! the only problem you might find is that alot of places won't let you fill refillable bottles, this is why i have a remote filler! the minimum delivery is 2 litres!

Here's an interesting thread on a forum I had not seen before.
I talked to the suppliers of these plastic bottles and they said the smallest ones (4kg and 10kg) have only one connection so you calculate how much gas to fill up to the 80% max.

This para on the eBay listing is interesting too:
You can fill these Bottles at any LPG filling station (over 1200 in the UK alone) or from your own Propane/LPG tank or storage device
Due to the new scenario of refillable bottles appearing on the market, it might be some time before staff at all LPG filling installations believe that it is permitted or safe to fill these bottles directly. However, untill they are all adequately trained, we also have available remote filling kits, which enable the bottle to be fixed in your motor home (for example), and this way the filling station should have no queries with you filling the bottle, in fact they probably won't even notice what you are filling.

Anyone tried filling a separate bottle at a normal filling station?

when I got the karmann I looked at all the refillable bottles/tanks on offer as my gas locker is for 2 german bottles and so 2 english bottles won't fit.

You have to ask the question 'how many times do you get your current bottle refilled?'
I worked out how quick I used the gas in my bay with a cooker and propex and doubled it as the karmann has a hot water heater as well.
It would take me well over a year to break even on the cost, I go away every month, so I decided to put it at the bottom of the 'to do' list and see how the gas consumption and refillable bottle prices go.

BP does a similar plastic bottle. The want £25 deposit then £17.90 to swap a 5kg bottle over. It would be a bonus it there was a safe DIY way of re-filling it.
