gearbox noise

Hi all

I have a noise coming from the gearbox (slight harsh metallic sound) when its idling in neutral. It has a new clutch and release bearing fitted and also a new bearing to accommodate the end of the spigot shaft.

It does have a similar sound to when a clutch release bearing is gone, as in when the clutch pedal is depressed the noise disappears. though with this being new I am suspecting some gearbox issue ?

The van is a 1983 model with a 1.9 DG and a 4 speed box

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

One of the release bearing clips come away or loose? Could do on a worn out clutch fork.

If you undo front gearbox mounts and those between box and engine you can generally just pull box slightly forward (support with jack), enough to inspect with a torch - saves pulling it down completely.

If it goes "kerchickychickychicky" it could be loose drive springs on the clutch plate setting up a chatter in the plate. I have had this before with a new clutch as well as old ones.

You could try pressing the clutch pedal and then releasing it veeeeeeeeery slowly and gently. If the noise insn't there any more then my bet would be on the drive springs.

Sometimes when you put in gear and drive forward or backwards a bit it disappears momentarily. I'm on the back foot with this as I had it rebuilt by a well advertised engine reconditioner and it arrived back to me beaten up by the courier company...There was a gouge in the bell housing and the spigot shaft was poking out of the packaging and slightly wobbly.

The company said suck it and see what happens....

Its some ten months nows since I had it back and with the van undergoing other restoration work its not been on the road, just run the engine recently and noticed the noise.

Has anyone been aware of a new release bearing being a problem? I moved the box back as recommended by CovKid to see if the clips were located on the fork properly and I found everything as it should be. And the drive springs in the friction plate seem firmly located.
I've dropped the box now and looking at the new Sachs release bearing it does look as if the centre plastic section is slightly offset to the centre of the bearin? It doesn't sound particularly harsh but I've ordered a new one just to try to make sure

release bearing is self centring design any offsetness is ok, sachs one is the best

if you have it out check the input shaft (and thus the mainshaft) can't be moved back and forwards, ie pull and push on the input shaft and feel for a definate movement not just the slight wobble there should be anyway and the very slight looseness back and fro

I've set my DTI gauge up on the end of the input shaft and get a reading of 0.23 mm
...not a right lot? Is this within tolerance ?
