Re: petrol or diesel
Most obvious identifier:
If your remove the rubber boot around the base of the gear lever in a petrol van, the "ball" assembly that it passes through will be only a few cm below the floor ducting (fitted to a caravelle or higher spec such as yours)
In a diesel, the floor/tunnel is higher so the ball will be a good way down a "well".
You can't mistake one for the other.
PS whats wrong with your gear lever that it needs replacing? Usual snap-off? They are repairable.

Re: petrol or diesel
what he says about the floor at the front - TD has a raised floor in the middle - also build plate under drivers seat and white sticker under dash if still present will tell you all you need to know, but what it was is less imprtant than what is fitted now - if it's a canted over TDi with a 5 speed box then you want to have the diesel 5 speed mount and the diesel 2wd rear linkage rod with the diesel cup fitted at the back and the 5 speed front linkage and gearstick at the front - version correct for shell so if petrol shell then petrol gearstick set up
