Cylinder Head Bolts?

Post by soulfly71 »

Hiya folks, I'm at a crossroads.
I've replaced the Head Gaskets and I'm wondering whether or not to replace the Long Head Bolts or?
Also, do I need to adjust the Tappets or will it be at a different setting bc of the New gaskets etc?
It's 1.9 dg petrol, wc, 84 manual
Advice appreciated :ok

Only replace the bolts if they are beginning to rust through otherwise leave well alone, same with the nuts. As for the tappets you will need to adjust those whether they are normal or hydraulic. If you can push down on the pushrod end of the rockers and they move they are not pumped up in which case adjust with a small gap of around 0.6 mm and run the engine for a spin (it will rattle) probably a few miles. Then pop the rockers off and try again.

There's a saying .."if it ain't broke..don't fix it"

Did you seal the gasket faces with chemical metal?
The faces tend to pit, and cause all your good work to be undone.

No Kev I haven't, I'm still cleaning everything thus far and not yet put the head back on.

It's ok, bacon roll and YouTube viewed, new green cylinder liner gasket on.
Just gonna finish cleaning the cylinder head now as it's a bit old lookin, clean that off, then start applying the sealants and get Torque'ing, I've heard not to use the Click type Torque bar? But it's the only one I have? :?

Sorry you misunderstood me
The chemical metal fills the pit holes so that the sealant seals evenly
never mind :D

Assuming irs an elring kit
Dirco black sealant on the water jacket seals, both sides is what i do Haynes shows just one side but i think thats why they fail
small tube of yellow on the nuts, use plenty.

I use meths to clean surfaces first

I use a click type torque wrench.

Dont forget to stretch out the push rod tubes a bit, I use a thin piece of hard plastic about 0.5mm thick and insert into a groove/ fold in the tube, roll it around, each one you do lenghens the tube a bit so when its bolted down seals are nice and tight. Dont need to stretch many out.
