Newbie with first t25 issues

Hi all, I'm new to this site and to old Vw campers. I've bought my first t25 auto sleeper. It's a 1982, it's been converted from a 2.0 petrol to a 1.9 diesel lump, I think from a seat Ibiza/golf.
I bought it with no tax or mot, I took it to the mot station and to my surprise, passed with a couple of minor advisories.
Then the nightmare started. I was on my home and all of a sudden there was thick black smoke started pumping from the exhaust and the engine was revving really high by itself, even after switching off the ignition.
The engine then died, I went to the back and pulled off the engine cover and there looked like diesel bubbling on top of the engine and oil looked like it was coming from the breather.
The aa came and before they towed me home, he started it again, and exactly the same happened.
Has anyone got any ideas on what this could be, and is there anyone who could possibly have a look or recommend a garage in the Barnsley/Sheffield area please.

since i was last on, ive drained the oil and topped up with fresh and new filter. managed to get it started but was smokey and running really lumpy. has anyone got any other ideas as to what it cold be, or is there someone who could look please. thanks luke.

Did you read the other thread that was linked to earlier? Follow the instructions on there regards cleaning things up etc,

The likely cause is your van built up excessive crank case pressure due to being over full of engine oil. This resulted in him? being sick and boffing a load of oil up the breather and into the inlet side of the engine. The engine was then running on lube and not diesel hence the unresponsive throttle. If you are lucky and the engine hasn't hydraulic't or over reved then it's just a case of cleaning out the excess oil in the air box/inlet manifold area, run the engine again to burn off the remaining oil.
Note* check the oil level on the flat is between the marks.
Infact, you may need to check the 'calibration' of the dipstick by draining the oil off completely, then refill with new filter exactly 4.5 litres of new Diesel specific oil (10W/40 or 15W40). Then run engine for one minute, stop one minute and dip the oil. Mark the high point as the 'upper level' on the dipstick mark 10-15mm below that for the minimum level.

it will be a little lumpy and smoky to start with.

hi, am i right in thinking its the air box/inlet manifold. how do i this please as im not a mechanic, but would try this if i had some instructions. sorry to be a pain but the replies are starting to reassure that there isnt nothing too serious wring. if anyone wants to call, my number is 07535863655. thanks guys.

How much oil did you put in? with filter change Im guessing about 4 1/2 litres if its same as my 1Y engine. Dont trust the dipstick unless your sure its been corrected to new level with engine change.

Hopefully with excess oil it will burn itself off - it really depends though as too much oil can lead to either too high pressure which can blow seals/gaskets or if it "froths" in the lower end you get too low pressure and lubrication problems.
Hopefully it will just be a matter of clearing the excess oil thats got into the intake side by running the engine for a while. This should also give you indicators if theres further damage.

Hi, have you heard of VAG CAT, its an online parts look up catalogue with "exploded" diagrams of all VW AUdi parts. You have to register to view the images but it can be invaluable when trying to find out exactly which part you need or how to disassemble something.

Sounds like its been running on its own oil. Generally it results in a totally knackered engine. Melted pistons, heat damaged head, damaged crank and con rods from over revving and hydraulic locking. Any engines I have seen that have run on their own oil have required full rebuilds or replacement
