Smell of Diesel......Suspect breather pipes?

Was wondering if anybody could help...

Fuel tank was removed / replaced recently on my van to install new water pipes...

Unfortunatley I didn't do it myself due to time etc and paid a mechanic to do it.

On a recent trip, after filling the van to the top, diesel copuld be smelt....

Have checked the breather pipes and have found one pipe disconnected, there are two pipes from the bottom of the expansion tank (filler side) - one pipe goes to a connector on top of the tank which joins to a braided pipe which goes to the other side the tank, this ones's ok - its the other pipe which is disconnected. (for the moment I've blocked this pipe off - I guess thats ok?)

This is not the pipe which connects to the top of the expansion tank - this one connects to nothing, I guess this is correct?

Its hard to tell from the Haynes manual which pipe goes where...

Its a 1989 van, originally a 1.6TD..
